Summer is here in full swing! The grandkids are off of school and it’s a great time to get together with family. For those in between times when the grandkids are in camp and their parents are at work, however, there is still plenty to do. Getting out of the house – whether to enjoy the sunshine outdoors or the warm evening air, or even to get together with friends in the air conditioning – will lift your spirits and can only improve your health. Here are a few ideas of the many happenings around town to get you started.
Senior Centers
The City of Chicago’s senior centers offer activities for seniors all throughout the summer and all around the city. Exercise your mind in the variety of classes offered, exercise your body and imagination on organized trips, or simply enjoy the laid back social atmosphere at parties and other recreational activities hosted at each of the local centers. Find the senior center nearest you and call to ask what’s on the program this week.
Summer Film Series
Running throughout the summer, from June 23rd to September 1st, there will be a summer film series at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The series is completely free of charge and is a great way to kick back and relax! For more information visit the Millenium Park website.
Summer Music Series
For the next three weeks, until August 27th, you can still enjoy the Millennium Park Music Series, also at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The free shows started with cutting-edge indie rock and pop music series Downtown Sound. Later in the series, you can expect to enjoy the fantastic Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series, showcasing jazz with a distinctively local flavor. Once again, more information is available via the Millenium Park website.
Summer Art Fair
From 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on August 16th, North School Park will be hosting a summer art fair. Come enjoy a in the park, a classical guitarist, ice cream, and more, while viewing local artists’ paintings, sculptures, photographs, and handmade crafts including jewelry and ceramics. This event is also free of charge, and offers a fun and laid back atmosphere to stimulate your mind, take a stroll and take in the local culture. For more information, visit the Art Guild’s website.
